Since its outbreak in the northern parts of Zambia in April 2017, African swine fever has resulted in the culling of more than 20 000 pigs. The outbreak started in Chinsali, and has since spread to four other districts, namely Chama, Isoka, Shiwang’andu and Mpika. The Minister of Livestock and Fisheries in the country, Michael Katambo, said in a news report that the Zambian government had thus far spent over two million kwachas (roughly R2,5 million) in an attempt to maintain the disease, and that strict quarantine measures had been implemented, as well as a ban on pork trade.
Listeria monocytogenes is a small, gram-positive bacillus that can grow in anaerobic or aerobic conditions. It is an opportunistic pathogen found widely in the environment in soil, decaying vegetation and water and may be part of the fecal flora of many mammals, including healthy human adults. Initial symptoms of infection include nonspecific flu-like symptoms, nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea and fever. There are few clinical features that are unique to listeriosis. Therefore, clinicians must consider a variety of potential causes for infection, including viral infections (influenza) and other bacterial infections that may cause sepsis or meningitis. Symptoms can develop at any time from 2 to 70 days after eating contaminated food. Except for vertical mother–fetus transmission, most cases of listeriosis begin with ingestion of the organism from a food source. It is quite a virulent pathogen with up to 20% of clinical infections resulting in death.
Most healthy adults and children who consume contaminated food experience only mild to moderate symptoms. People with poor immune function are at much higher risk of severe, life-threatening forms of listeriosis. In pregnant women, listeriosis can result in miscarriage, premature delivery, serious infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.

The allergens causing type I hypersensitivity reactions are mostly proteins derived from the natural environment (e.g. plant pollen, animal hair, food, mites, and insect venoms). The characteristic of type I allergies is the involvement of allergen specific immunoglobulins (antibodies) of class E (sIgE). Hence, the detection of specific IgE is an important tool of modern allergy diagnostics.
To cover the basics, anaemia is a common medical condition which occurs due to a low level of Haemoglobin (Hb) in each Red Blood Cell, or if you have a low level of Red Blood Cells than normal. Red Blood Cells are a key component of our blood as they take oxygen around our bodies. During anaemia, there is basically low oxygen being carried around the bloodstream.
There are several types of anaemia, the most common being Iron-deficiency Anaemia. Other inherited types of anaemia include the so-called Haemolytic Anaemias (e.g. Sickle cell anaemia, Thalassaemia, etc.) whereby Red Blood Cells are fragile and break easily in the bloodstream. Aplastic anaemia occurs as a result of some cancers which affect the bone marrow such as leukemia. Our focus is on Iron-deficiency anaemia which is caused by a lack of iron in the body. We need iron to manufacture Haemoglobin contained in each Red Blood Cell. Haemoglobin is a protein molecule which binds to oxygen and help to transport and store it in the bloodstream. Deficiency of iron (and other vitamins) in our bone marrows leads to a lack of Hb, which can leads to anaemia. Read more about Iron-deficiency Anaemia...

Fight Cryptococcal Meningitis with the StrongStep® Cryptococcal Antigen Rapid Test! Now available through RDS!
Cryptococcal Meningitis (CM) is a deadly infection of the lining of the spinal cord and brain. It is commonly caused by a fungus called Cryptococcus neoformans, which is found in soil all over the world, particularly soil that contain bird droppings. CM can also be caused by another fungus, Cryptococcus gattii, which likes to grow in the debris around the base of the eucalyptus tree.
CM is a major cause of illness in people living with HIV/AIDS most notably individuals with a CD4 count of below 100. It's a troublesome opportunistic infection. About a million cases of the disease are reported worldwide each year, resulting in approximately 625,000 deaths. Cryptococcal Antigen (also called "CRAG") is detectable weeks before the onset of the disease symptoms (which include a stiff neck, headache, confusion, nausea & vomiting, sensitivity to bright light, & blurred vision). Screening for cryptococcal antigenaemia in patients at risk is clinically important, and does prevent high hospitalization costs and deaths! Especially in a point-of-care setting...

Diabetes, also called diabetes mellitus, is a chronic condition associated with abnormally high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. In 2014, it was estimated that 9% adults aged 18+ years, globally, have diabetes. WHO projects that diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of death in 2030.
Healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and avoiding tobacco use can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes, the prevalent type around.
Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that allows your body to use sugar (glucose) from carbohydrates in the food that you eat for energy or to store glucose for future use. Insulin helps keeps your blood sugar level from getting too high (hyperglycemia) or too low (hypoglycemia). It's like a "key" for this process! Lack or insufficient production of insulin, or even an inability of the body to properly use insulin is a primary cause for Diabetes.

Disinfectants made too weak will only suspend the growth of bacteria without providing total kill (known as the bacteriostatic effect), especially when protein or dirt are present.
Over time, constant incorrect usage will give rise to resistant strains increasing potential for brand damaging recalls. Whilst untrue surface/environmental results will permit contaminated product to be released for general sale. By using our Sponge Sampling Kit with Neutralizing Buffer you can be sure to uncover hidden contamination.
Diabetes is now a major public health problem. The number of people with diabetes is estimated to reach 366 million by 2030. There is a high burden from the disease: people with diabetes have an increased two to four fold risk of stroke and heart disease compared to the general population, and increased incidence of retinopathy, peripheral nerve damage and renal problems. There is now strong evidence for the effectiveness of tight glycemic control in reducing complications among people with diabetes.
We now supply Glucoflex-R Visual Strips which use Glucose Oxidase/Peroxidase reaction to yield visual glucose level results from finger-prick blood in seconds.
Only 20μl of blood is needed, measurement range is 1-44mmol/l. A colour chart is provided to aid in interpreting visual results.

Mycoplasma is a common contaminant in cell cultures, virus stocks, and other cell-derived biologicals. It has been shown that many cell cultures are infected with Mycoplasma.
Mycoplasma contamination can cause deterioration of growth and viability of a normal cell, synthesis of DNA/RNA and protein expression. Contaminated cultures must be isolated and destroyed quickly to avoid cross contamination. Testing for Mycoplasma is an essential quality control tool to ensure accurate research and biotechnological products!
Aflatoxin is a toxic and carcinogenic substance of the mold fungus varieties Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. They have four principle types in grain and nuts: B1, B2, G1 and G2. Aflatoxin can be easily found on commodities such as grain, corn, peanuts, cottonseed, milo, and the majority of tree nuts. When cows consume grain or feeds containing aflatoxin, they create a metabolite that is found in their milk, mainly Aflatoxin M1 which gets created from Aflatoxin B1.
